Dear Neighbor,

Our Central Garden Grove Neighborhood Association annual meeting in July was a success!  It was well attended by 135 plus concerned residents.  We had elected officials from the federal, state and local levels of our government which gave us updated information.  Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, State Senator Lou Correa, Assemblyman Van Tran, and Councilmember Mark Rosen spoke and answered questions. We have accomplished our goals of creating communication and exchanging information with our government.  We would like to thank you, our members and residents, for making our meeting a neighborhood achievement.

Thursday, August 16th, County Supervisor Chris Norby to speak about the abuse of power by redevelopment agencies. You are welcome to attend. Garden Grove Downtown Business Association at 6:30pm, 12866 Main Street, next to the Chamber of Commerce, for additional information 534-0992.

Our Garden Grove City Council unanimously denied a request by a developer to create a special tax also known as Mello-Roos for new home buyers. We agree with the decision to keep this new tax out of our city.

The Planning Commission meeting on July 19th had over a hundred attendees and heard thirty public comments to the draft Environmental Impact Report for the proposed Super-Walmart at the former Vons Pavilion site.  There were three who spoke in favor with the majority, twenty-seven in opposition.  There were specific questions addressing the methodologies for the traffic and sewer studies, concerns for the sale of firearms and ammunition in the proposed 24 hour store, negative impacts to our existing retail and grocery businesses, as well as the need for decent wages and benefits for Wal-Mart employees.  The final Environmental Impact Report is expected by the end of September or early October.

The free weekly local newspaper, The Journal, has recently reported a billion dollar proposal to build an Indian Casino on Harbor Blvd in Garden Grove. The proposal has not been formally heard by the city council to date. There are significant legislative changes needed by the federal, state and local levels of government to permit gambling in our city.  The Journal is published on Thursdays.
