Dear Neighbors,
It is a New Year and we have new ideas to improve our community.
Here is a rundown of the latest news and upcoming events.
A few Garden Grove community leaders have been chosen to lead in county
and national positions. Former Mayor Kay Barr is now the Chair
for the Orange County Water District Board. County Supervisor
Janet Nguyen, a former City Councilmember, is now the Chair for the
County Board of Supervisors. Garden Grove Traffic Commissioner
Joseph Pak was nominated to serve on the National Council on
Disability. We wish to extend our congratulations to them all!
Oral Communications:
Thankfully, last November, the City Council decided to maintain the
five-minute time allotment for residents to speak during public
communications at City Council meetings. Our input is important
to ensure democracy.
The last meeting for the proposed new park in the Brookhurst Triangle
is scheduled for Tuesday,
February 2nd at 6:00 p.m.
It will be held at Kiwanisland,
which is located at 9840 Larson Ave, Garden Grove. We will be
notified next October as to whether we have qualified for the state
grant. In order to best prepare for the grant application, a
professional park planner has been hired to prepare a conceptual design
for the new park. Please contact Janet Pelayo at 714 741-5215 for
additional information. Your participation is vital to
incorporate your ideas into the park. Join us!
New trees for Garden Grove!
Our Board Member Ralph Laudenslayer has led a joint nonprofit community
organization effort to replace four floral crape myrtle trees along
Bixby Avenue near Brookhurst Street. We are grateful for the
support from the Living Spring Christian Fellowship, the Malibar
Apartments and the Moose Lodge. The tree planting ceremony will
be held on Arbor Day, which is
Wednesday, March 10, 2010.
(More details as to the time of day of this event will be provided in
our next newsletter.) The city street tree division will be on
hand to give their assistance as well as our local Channel 3 news
coverage. Come join in the fun!

The Planning Commission has a vacancy.
The Planning Commission is currently comprised of five men and one
woman. The mayor appoints commissioners with City Council approval. The
City Council is looking for an involved citizen who can attend meetings
twice a month to study proposed development projects. The commission
ensures that proposed developments meet the City's technical,
environmental and aesthetic standards. The commission holds public
hearings to check site plans to make sure they comply with City zoning
regulations and the General plan for development. We encourage our
members to apply. Contact City Clerk at 714 741-5040 or apply
online at http://www.ci.garden-grove.ca.us/?q=citymanager/commissions
Respectfully,
Cheryl Armstrong
