A) Location:

  • All agreed this was a “very good” location. In that it provided a “neighborhood” atmosphere. Hospitality was great with Laurie Merrick helping greatly, and Vern providing excellent background music for all to enjoy. Rented tables & chairs were adequate, while shade was sufficient. Decorations and signage provided a colorful touch.

B) Refreshments:

  • Free taco’s “hit the spot” for all members. “Tito” and his helper provided chicken, beef, and pork taco’s for the taco’s. Also plenty of toppings for everyone’s tastes. Special cookies and pink lemonade were enjoyed by all, while fresh local apricots provided by a local member were a special surprise.

C) Speakers:

  • On the Federal level, Carlos Urquiza -Field Representative for Loretta Sanchez, US Congress spoke about Washington business.
  • State legislators (Alan Mansour and Jose Solorio) provided significant information and updated budget news.
  • Christy Delp, a field representative for Janet Nguyen, provided news on the County front.
  • Councilman Bruce Broadwater spoke for the City Council.
  • Police Captain Mike Handfield and Lt Kevin Boddy took questions from the audience which included significant information about fireworks and some information about medical marijuana collectives in Garden Grove.
  • Fire Chief Dave Bertka also spoke to the members. He addressed many questions about fireworks due to July 4th approaching. Both departments reported on their respective departments, and fielded many questions.
  • The PA system seemed a bit muffled and an attempt should be made next year to improve the clarity of the microphone.
  • Many speakers abandoned the mic and these also lead to an informal atmosphere with the members.
  • John Wildsmith handled the MC duties especially well and kept the raffle moving with wife, Elena’s help.
  • Verla Lamberts handmade quilt was a hit at the silent auction.
  • Patty Petruzelli, our local code enforcement officer was on hand for any and all questions.
  • Sherry Hess, area Community Services Officer, was also in attendance and well prepared for the event.

D) Summary

  • Board members agreed that the meeting was a grand success and served its purpose well. They look forward to planning new projects to provide more benefits to tour members.
